What is hamster hibernation?
While some small animals hibernate, hamsters do not typically undergo hibernation. However, they can enter a state known as torpor when temperatures drop too low. During torpor, a hamster’s body temperature and activity level lower to help conserve energy. Torpor can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days but usually won’t last for extended periods, especially in pet hamsters – it’s important to note that pet hamsters don’t need to hibernate, particularly in a warm, indoor environment. The team at Molesey Vets’ suggest that if you’re concerned your hamster may be inactive due to cold weather, here are a few signs to watch for:
- Cold body: Your hamster might feel cooler than usual when in torpor.
- Slow or shallow breathing: Breathing can slow down, making it seem like they’re barely breathing.
- Non-reactive: Hamsters usually respond to sounds, but a hamster in torpor may remain still and unresponsive.

Spotting signs of illness
If your hamster suddenly becomes less active, it may signal illness rather than torpor. Respiratory issues, dental problems, and other health concerns can lead to lethargy. Be on the lookout for these signs and contact our team for advice:
- Difficulty breathing: Laboured breathing could point to a respiratory issue, unlike torpor.
- Discharge from the nose: This could be a sign of a cold or infection.
- Refusal to eat or drink: A lack of appetite is a common indicator of illness.
- Reduced exploration: If your hamster isn’t moving around as much, they may be feeling unwell.
If you notice any of these signs, call our vet practice in East Molesey on 0208 979 1384.
If your hamster is cold, stiff, and unresponsive, it may sadly mean they’ve passed away. Please don’t hesitate to contact our compassionate team at Molesey Vets for support or advice during this tough time.
Winter care to avoid torpor
The key to preventing torpor is ensuring your hamster’s environment remains warm. The team at Molesey Vets recommend these easy steps to help maintain a cosy habitat:
- Position the cage away from cold draughts, avoiding areas near windows or doors where the temperature changes frequently.
- Provide extra soft bedding for insulation to help them stay warm.
- Maintain a stable room temperature between 18-22°C.
- Include hideouts so your hamster feels secure and protected.
