We first wrote about this in September 2023, and now the deadline is here. The UK Government has updated the laws regarding cat microchipping in England, and Molesey Vets wants all cat owners in Surrey to be aware of these changes. As of 10th June 2024, it is now legally required for all cats over 20 weeks of age to be microchipped. This important update aims to enhance the safety and traceability of cats, ensuring lost or injured pets can be quickly reunited with their owners.
To comply with the new regulation and avoid a £500 fine, book your cat’s microchip appointment with our experienced team of cat vets in Molesey by calling 0208 979 1384.

The new law requires that all cat owners in England ensure their cats are microchipped by the deadline. Previously, microchipping was recommended but not compulsory. Due to the rising number of cats becoming lost, stolen, or involved in road accidents, collars and tags have proven insufficient for reliable identification. This regulation aims to address these issues by making microchipping a legal requirement, offering a more permanent and secure method of identification.
You must also ensure your details are kept up to date on a DEFRA compliant national database.
More compelling reasons to get your cat chipped
Besides the risk of a £500 for non-compliance, here are some of the most important reasons for getting your cat microchipped:
- Lost Pets: Microchips provide quick reunions by allowing rescue centres, vets, and control officers to access owner contact info.
- Theft Prevention: Microchipped pets deter theft as they’re easily identified and returned, complicating resale.
- Emergency Contact: Microchips aid vets in contacting owners swiftly during accidents or medical emergencies.
- Ownership Proof: Registered microchips serve as legal proof of ownership, settling disputes and ensuring pets stay with rightful owners.
- Travel Compliance: Microchips meet travel regulations, ensuring pets can be returned if lost during trips.
Don’t wait until the deadline. Book your cat’s microchipping appointment today to ensure their safety and your peace of mind. Our vets at Molesey can implant the microchip during a regular consultation.
