Antifreeze poisoning in cats – what you need to know

January 29, 2024

Antifreeze is a common household item for most pet owners in Teddington, especially during winter. However, even a small amount can pose a significant danger to your cat. The primary threat arises from ethylene glycol, which is toxic to cats.

This substance is equally hazardous for dogs and can produce similar effects.

If you suspect your pet may have ingested antifreeze, contact Alpha Vets immediately at 0208 943 2303.

Why cats like to lick antifreeze

The sugary taste of antifreeze makes it appealing to cats (and dogs). They often attempt to lick it off driveways, and once ingested, ethylene glycol is quickly absorbed into their bloodstream. After your cat’s liver metabolises the toxin, the by-products produced, including oxalate crystals and acids, cause severe damage to the kidneys and other organs. Acute kidney failure due to antifreeze poisoning can be fatal and painful. Prompt treatment provides the best chance of recovery for your pet.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning in cats

All symptoms of antifreeze poisoning can manifest within 24–72 hours of ingestion. Look for symptoms such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of coordination
  • Seizures
  • Signs of kidney failure, including increased thirst and urination

If your cat is admitted to Alpha Vets with suspected antifreeze poisoning, treatments may include induced vomiting, administering activated charcoal, and providing intravenous fluids to support kidney function.

Protect your cat

To safeguard your cats (and dogs), be diligent about keeping antifreeze containers securely closed and stored out of reach. Clean up any spills promptly and consider using antifreeze products containing propylene glycol, which is less toxic but still poses a risk if ingested in large quantities.

Contact Alpha Vets immediately if you are concerned about your pet or if you know they have been exposed to antifreeze.
