Why Darren recommends exotic pet microchipping

February 7, 2024

If you own an exotic pet such as a bird, reptile or fish, you know they can be expensive – and also that they become very close to your heart.

In case you lose them around East Molesey or are unfortunate enough to be the victim of theft, it’s so important that you have the best chance of being reunited.

Microchipping is only a legal requirement for dogs and cats currently, but in our view, it’s essential for ALL pets.

How does microchipping help pets?

Exotic pet microchipping can give you peace of mind, knowing that you have given your pet the absolute best chance of being reunited with you if they go missing.

How pet microchipping works

If your exotic pet is found and is taken to a veterinary practice or animal shelter, the staff there can use a special microchip scanner to obtain the chip’s unique code, which will be matched to your information in the central microchipping database (providing you keep it up to date).

Already chipped but want to check the details? Ask our team to check your pet’s microchip at their next appointment at Molesey Vets.

Benefits of exotic pet microchipping

Our exotics enthusiast and Vet Darren Partridge is a huge fan of exotic pet microchipping for the reasons set out below. They are also keen to point out that most pets can be microchipped – they just need to be big enough to have the microchip implanted, which is about the size of a grain of rice.

Ask our team for advice if you are unsure if your exotic pet is big enough to be microchipped.

We’ve known people to chip corn snakes, tortoises, parrots, hedgehogs, beardies, and lots of other unusual pets. Why?

  1. It can make a big difference to your pet insurance, as insurers understand that they’re much less likely to receive a claim on a microchipped creature. This is because they’re much more likely to be identified and returned to their rightful owners.
  2. Tortoises are particularly well-known for roaming and can easily get out of small gaps in your garden fence or hedge, even if you think you’ve been super careful.
  3. There’s always the risk of a bird taking flight – it’s something they tend to be rather good at.
